Midlife - Decay or Ascent!

Midlife, is it a time of decay or ascent? Usually known as the years between 35 - 45, the transition to midlife can be turbulent. Some folks embark on regressive behavior, buying fast cars, divorce and the reckless abandon of desires they've suppressed throughout adolescence and adulthood. While for others it is a time to seek higher virtues, a time of great opportunity to evaluate, change career or embrace some past or new passion.

Psychologists describe it as time of listening to the voice within, A time to move through life and develop one's inner personality and accept and develop all aspects of ones self, to preserve precious values and acknowledge both ones 'shadow' and light side.

It's particularly encouraging to hear about leaders choosing a healthy work life transition during midlife. Like Toni, 49 years, a partner in a high profile Los Angeles Law firm, who reduced his hours to 3 days per week to care for his brand new granddaughter so his daughter-in-law could return to work. Toni says he loves the new insights and perspective he's gained from caring for the baby. For example, professionally he needed to consider the increased workload on the partners in the firm, to ensure they were not disadvantaged. Secondly, he said the experience has led to improving his skill in prioritizing, communicating, negotiating and cooperating. Thirdly, Toni said he learnt to be far more patient, live in the present moment to ensure he enjoys the baby and maintains positive relationships all around.

Then there was Ms. Milway, reported in the Wall Street Journal, who decided to leave her corporate consulting job to kindle her passion for public service and write a book for children. The result she said was 'uplifting and gives me more time for family and community based work'.

Midlife offers the opportunity to find one's truth and purpose. It is an exciting time, a time to become integrated outwardly and within.
