Pregnancy

A positive pregnancy test opens up a whole new world of emotions for those involved, disbelief, acceptance, trepidation, joy, fears, anticipation and elation to name a few. Plus you will face many physical and social changes during the time you're carrying your child, like no other time in your life.

During your pregnancy your relationship with your partner or those closest to you may change. Even when you are looking forward to the birth of your baby with excitement and enthusiasm, the mixture of anxiety and expectation about the relatively unknown territory of having your first child and racing hormones can all contribute to the occasional relationship drama.

The feelings of those who care about you

It's important to be sensitive to the feelings of your partner or those who will support you during your pregnancy and the birth. While they are not experiencing your physical side of your pregnancy, many of the emotions they experience are just as strong. Worries about being supportive during and after the birth from a practical point of view may surface. Important questions about your return to work, career, caretaker roles etc will arise. Make sure you allow time to talk about your feelings, concerns and listen to theirs.

Every mum to be wants to have a healthy, happy pregnancy. Start straight away to ensure yours is.

9 tips for a happy pregnancy
  1. Prioritize during pregnancy: Look closely at what you need to do to help yourself and your growing baby. Decide what you need to do and what else you can do and let the rest go.

  2. Get others involved in your pregnancy: Your partner, other family members and friends. This helps them understand what you're going through and they can be more supportive.

  3. Give respect and love to others: At the beginning of your pregnancy you may be having a hard time with morning sickness. Show respect and love for others concern and they will respond in kind.

  4. Make memories: Jot down your feelings and experiences and involve your partner in this. Take photos so you can look back and share this special time. You and your children will be glad you did.

  5. Relax when you can: Focus on what's important in your lives and do things you find relaxing. Do things to reduce your stress like easy exercises or listen to a relaxation CD.

  6. Enjoy this preparation time: It's a time to concentrate on nurturing your relationships. Soon you will be busy with a new baby as well as your personal and professional life.

  7. Keep positive: Ignore stories of scary births and problems from others. Most pregnancies turn out great.

  8. Ask for help: Family and friends will be willing to help, if you ask them.

  9. Be informed: Read pregnancy books and DVD's that are informative and inspirational.
