Maximizing a Child's Potential

Enriching children's learning experiences and providing opportunities for children to maximize their potential is the obligation of every parent. Yet up until now there have been very few parenting books based on sound research that describe how children can thrive in today's complex, turbulent, distracting world. The good news is that a newly published text by Ellen Galinsky, President of the Work Family Institute New York, suggests simple daily activities that all parents can do to build 7 essential life skills to raise well-rounded children.

Research for the book took 8 years to complete and explored the science of the developing child's mind. The author filmed and interviewed over 70 neuroscientists.

Importantly, adults require these same 7 skills and should practice and model them to children through their daily endeavors no matter what the child's age. It is never too late to start the learning process to acquire these skills.

The 7 essential skills children need to thrive include:

Skill 1: Focus and Self Control - attention, remembering the rules, flexible thinking,

Skill 2: Perspective Taking - working out what others think

Skill 3: Communication - what's to be communicated and how will it be understood

Skill 4: Making Connections - what's new, different and unusual

Skill 5: Critical Thinking - testing and analyzing ideas

Skill 6: Taking on Challenges - a willingness to try

Skill 7: Self-directed Engaged Learning - continuous learning in a dynamic world.
