Workplace Etiquette

Work etiquette may have been simpler in the days when the workplace was stratified by age, fewer generations worked together, and the rules were formal and clear cut. Today four distinct generations are working together in a workplace that is more fluid and dynamic than it has ever been. Each age group brings its own values and expectations to work, creating the potential for tremendous teamwork and collaboration but also for occasional conflicts.

A basic understanding of workplace etiquette issues can help you work effectively with people of all ages in your organization.

5 tips to help!

Be aware of and avoid stereotypes and generalizations about age. Stereotypes prevent people from working together closely and effectively.

Recognize that each generation brings its own unique talents and strengths to the workplace.

Focus on the core values you have in common with co-workers rather than the differences that may divide you. Everyone wants to learn and grow and feel valued and productive. Everyone likes recognition and wants to be treated with respect.

Misunderstandings around communication - politeness in written communication sometimes occur among the generations. Casual language in emails and familiar forms of address can seem completely normal to one person and rude or offensive to another. Misunderstandings like these can be avoided by talking openly and communicating ground rules.

Norms around giving and receiving feedback can be different in each generation. To avoid misunderstandings, talk with co-workers and your manager and agree on the feedback practices that will work best for all of you.
